Blog Niche Site Ideas: What is a Blogging Niche
Before we get into specific blog niche ideas, let’s start by defining what a niche is.
In general terms the word niche is used to describe an area of specific interest or activity. So within the context of blogging a niche is a website that produces great content that focuses on one areas of interest.
A niche is a segment of a market or category. Or in its truest form it is a sub-section of a category.
In my experience the more focused and specific your niche is the better. As this, distils the audience down into a highly engaged group of followers or customers. They are already half way there…full of that niche enthusiasm.
Niching Down
You may have seen or read the phrase ‘niching down’. To niche down is to drill down into a sub level of a topic. If I was running a food blog for example, I may niche down several levels.

Now Vegan Desserts may seem very specialist, but it get over 35,000 Google searches every month.
Hopefully that provides a simple explanation of what we mean by the term ‘niche’ and niching down’.
So lets touch on the benefits of using a ‘niche’ focused strategy. Why do we do it and what is there to gain with this approach.
What Is A Niche Site
A niche site is a website that applies the niche principles we have outlined so far. So lets look at the benefits of doing this. Maybe you will choose to apply some of these ideas into your own approach.
Building Niche Authority
We all know that search engines are stuffed full of content, including a lot of great copy. So why will your content stand out and be found? Well it wont. No seriously it wont, unless you do something special. Think about it…
Google is a crowded space, with over 400 million blogs and 4.45 billion web pages floating around in cyber space.
To stand out and be seen you need to fulfil Google’s criteria and make the machine happy:
- Produce amazing content that directly answers the users question or intent of users
- Have excellent website structure so Google can crawl and read the content efficiently
- Build Domain and Page Authority so Google picks up the ‘Trust’ signals from other respected sites in your niche
A Niche Site needs to clearly align itself to a specific topic or areas of interest to capitalize of the opportunities to stand out and build Google trust signals. Linking to high domains authority websites within the same niche.
Niche Blog Domain Authority
Domain Authority is a quality score devised by Moz.com. You build domain authority when other trusted websites link or refer back to your website. Google sees this reference as a signal that your content is of a high quality, or why would these other website be linking to it.
These links, known as backlinks, inform Google this content is good and more people should see it.
When high authority websites in your niche link to you, it has a greater effect on your own Domain Authority and Page Authority score. It is extremely beneficial if the linking site has high Domain Authority themselves. As the referring website passes some of it’s authority onto your website through the linking process.
Low Competition
If your working away in your niche, focusing on a narrow scope of topics. Then in theory you have less competition, and a greater opportunity to build domain authority from similar website to yours.
Let’s go back to our niche subject example, Vegan Desserts. There will be thousands of bloggers out there talking about Food & Drink. If you’re just about to post your first blog thinking you can carve up the Food & Drink market. Not likely.
However, if you niche down and start off specialising on Vegan Dessert then you have half a chance creating domain authority in that niche.
Once you conquer one sub niche, you can push on and add another closely related niche to it. Maybe you could add Keto Desserts. You can keep adding to you niches and building out a large body of content and authority.
Blog Brand Identity
You’re possibly wondering what branding has to do with niche blogging. Well, they are superb bedfellows.
Great Brands
A great brand can provide a common identity for consumers to associate with. Great brands have aspirational qualities, people want to be seen to be associated with it. People ‘feel’ great brands, they provide an emotional connection. A connection with a certain lifestyle.
Niche Enthusiast Groups
Enthusiasts are committed to a topic or at the very least could be considered ‘switchable’ or a ‘high prospect’. They usually see their interest as an key part of their lifestyle. They often want to be associated with it, known for it. The golfer, photographer, motorbike enthusiast. They have all the latest gear.
So what does all that mean. Well, if you can …
- Produce niche content that people find valuable
- Create a credible and inspirational website image
- Find your niche enthusiast by the keywords they use to search
Well, then you will have found the magic formula for blogging success. This group of people want to associate with anything associated with their hobby, interest, lifestyle. They will be swarming all over your blog like wasps on a jelly sandwich.
Personal Brand or Blog Brand
So how do you incorporate Brand within your blog? You have two options when it comes to branding
- Build your Personal Brand
- Build your Blogs Brand
If you’re an industry expert then your personal brand will be half of the equation, so you should leverage it to take a competitive advantage. For example Neil Patel is a high profile digital marketeer. His personal brand would bring an existing audience with it.
Unless you’re a niche superstar the chances are you’re going to have to build your blog’s brand. This is a good strategy as it keep your blog independent of your name, meaning you can sell it and take the cash if you choose.
It’s not easy selling a brand when the brand is you!
It’s easier to achieve a sense of brand identify when talking to a focused and familiar audience. Just the type of audience you can attract within your niche.
Remember…enthusiasts already have an interest in your niche. How do we know that? Well they entered a question into Google and found you. Your job is to figure out how to solve their problems and bring value to the relationship.
If you can do that, you will succeed.
What Niches Are Most Profitable
It’s possible to broadly group niches into larger categories for the purpose of identifying what niches are most profitable and indeed popular. They can often go hand in hand. At the highest level we can group them as Home & DIY, Food, Health, Marketing, Travel, Fashion, Personal Finance and Mommy blogs.
Okay I know… I can almost hear you screaming ‘what about Technology’, ‘you’ve missed Arts & Crafts’. I can’t argue with you on that. Other than to say popularity in this case is based on the volume of Searches made on Google.
Most Popular Blogging Niches
- Travel
- Food
- Home & DIY
- Fashion
- Health
During the past 12 months, search data show the most popular blog niche of 2019-2020 was Travel. Receiving more than 30% more search volume than Food blogs in second place.

Travel and Food are the most popular by nature of how broad these niches reach. There is also a low barrier to entry, meaning anyone can write about their holiday, or what they have for lunch.
Health is a very competitive niche, due to the large commercial opportunities in fitness and weight loss. With a lot of companies operating in these markets it makes it difficult to compete with corporate investment.
Most Profitable Niches
Marketing and Finance are the most profitable. This, by definition also means they are the most competitive. However if you can break through the rewards are significant. It is however, easier said than done. Where there’s money you will also find the very best bloggers chasing it.
Picking The Most Profitable Blog Niches
Identifying the most profitable blog niche for is very much on a case by case basis. If you are an authority on Travel then you will have a competitive advantage. So you should be able to monetize your expertise.
If you are a whiz at affiliate marketing, then you may consider taking on the more challenging arena of Personal Finance. Profitability is a relative concept in niche blogging. It’s more about giving yourself the best chance of success by playing to your strengths.
Add Value
When compiling your blog niche list, start by considering areas where you can truly add value. It’s a competition so you need to be able to compete. Meaning, you need to know your subject. That’s not to say you need to be some kind of Ninja Blogger, but focus on your strengths…it will make the process far more enjoyable.
The Long Game
Building a blog is a long term objective. It will take months or even years to achieve your goals. Make sure you start what you can finish. If you’re not happy producing content, well, you won’t. It’s a sure way to fail. Commit and stay committed.
It’s a cliché to say chose a topic you love. But there is some truth in it. I’ve tried both paths and when the going gets tough, its human nature to take the least path of resistance.
Monetize Your Blog
Do you want to profit from your blog? Maybe it’s a side hustle or your going all-in and aiming to make it a full time career. If so, you better make sure there’s money in your chosen niche.
Prove it to Yourself
- I suggest you pick a niche you can add value to. If not be prepared for a steep learning curve.
- You need to be able to sustain your content output…any enjoy it
- You need to asses the niche for potential earnings.
This should provide you with a niche short list. Before you go any further I suggest you enter each niche into Google Trends. Look to see if they are climbing or falling. You don’t want to spend the next two years creating content if no one’s going to be looking for it.

If you are familiar with nutrition and diets, you have probably read about the Paleo diet. It’s a niche within the feed category that attracted a large follow a decade ago.
Researching the Google search trends of the last five years, there is a clear declining trend. At its peak in 2016 it touches 100 on the trend chart. In 2020 we can see it drops below 25 on the chart. That’s a 75% decline in the 4 years between 2016-2020.
It goes without saying if you started blogging on Paleo in 2016 you would be pretty frustrated right now.
I usually research Google trends to give me the confidence that I’m going with the tide of public behaviour. You can overlay multiple niches to compare their relative popularity to one another and trend trajectory.
How to Start a Niche Blog
Hopefully you now know the niche you want to dominate and conquer. I know you can do it!
The next step is to start your niche blog and don’t delay. Now is the perfect time to get your blog underway. Here’s some further help to support you through the initial steps of setting up a niche blog and website with best foundation.
I would love to come on that journey with you. In fact why don’t we do it together. This website is designed to provide you with a shortcut to success. I can guide you through your journey to blogging success and financial freedom.
Choose Your Blog Domain Name
There are several considerations when choosing a domain name for your blog.
Brand: How important is it that your domain name contains your brand or a keyword
New or Used Domain Name: When buying domain names you have two choices.
- New Domain: The advantage here is that you can choose exactly what domain name you want, so long as it is available. Allowing you to incorporate your brand name or any other elements you like into your domain address.
- Used Domain: You can purchase a second hand or expired domain name that has been used previously. There are advantages to doing this. Used domain names often come with existing backlinks and domain authority, as well as being aged.
Buying a used or aged domain name can reduce the time it take to rank in Google’s search engine. However, buying used domains does come with some risks and these risks needs managing. This is another topic in itself that i cover elsewhere.
Extension: A domain extension is the .com .org .net part of the domain name. Generally .com are use for companies and .org for non-profit organizations. However there are many extension to choose from.
Depending on your goal each of these elements have pros and cons. So use the resources on this website to help you walk through the process of picking the right domain name for your specific needs.
Buying a Domain Name
Once you have chosen you domain name, you need to purchase it. Meaning you are the registered owner for whatever period of time you choose.
There are many websites that sell domain names. For new domain names I recommend you use Bluehost. If you subscribe their hosting package you get a free new domain included. I will cover this in more detail under the section Selecting a Hosting Service.
First you need to check the domain name you want is available by searching for it here. You will also need to decide if you buy a .com domain or one of the other many extensions such as .co.uk or .org. if in doubt aim for a .com domain.
But before you do that, be sure to read our recommendation on hosting. Site speed is a major factor in Google’s ranking criteria. A great domain name is one thing, but it needs to be hosted by one of the top hosting companies for Google to love it.
What Website Platform Should I Use To Create My Blog
There are several platforms to build websites and blogs.
You may be familiar with Wix, Shopify or Square Space. These are all great platforms, but they are really designed for creating eCommence stores.
However I guess you are here because your aim is to blog? Then 100% you need to be using a WordPress website.
It is better suited to developing an effective and flexible blog that can grow with you over time. It is also better designed to take advantage of search engine optimization. First of all you need to pick your web hosting service.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Are The Best Blog Niches
During the past 12 months, search trends suggest that the best blogs of 2019-2020 have been Travel blogs. Receiving more than 30% more search volume than Food blogs in second place.
- Travel
- Food
- Home & DIY
- Fashion
- Health
What Blog Niches Are Most Profitable?
The most profitable blog niches are also the most competitor niches. It stands to reason, where there is money to be made, the big players are in town.
In terms of earning possibilities, personal finance and marketing are right up there. But there’s not enough money to go around.
If you want to make a reasonable income look to one of the less competitive niches. The more specialist the better.
What Should My Blog Niche Be?
If you are going to commit a great deal of time and energy into writing and developing a blog. The you need to be interested. I mean interested enough to do it every days for years.
Only you will know if your goal is to do it for passion or profit. If its profit then your blog niche should be one that you know you can monetize. There are many ways to monetize a blog, for example:
- Advertisements
- Affiliate Commission
- Selling Physical Product
- Selling Digital Products
For anyone to take your blog seriously, you need to have subject authority. This means you need to be a subject expert. You don’t necessarily have to be that on day one. But you will need to learn your subject on the job.
Can You Recommend a Blog Niche Generator
Key Search is a pretty good website to generate random topics. It’s not going to give the exact answer you are looking for but it may provide you with a little bit of lateral content. Think of it like random word generator that may inspire you to dig into areas you just would not have otherwise researched.
Can You Suggest A Few Unique Blog Ideas
I know of a few very successful blogs that I would never has through of myself. Pool maintenance, Evergreen Trees, Folk Dance, ‘Hungover Owls’, Ghost Stories, People on The Tube, The Male Nanny.
If you can dream it up, then someone is probably blogging about it. There is an audience for everything. You job is to decide if that audience is big enough and can it be monetized.
